There is no set rate of pay for apprentices however the National Minimum Wage (NMW) for an apprentice is £3.40 per hour. The apprentice NMW applies to all 16 to 18 year olds and to those aged 19 and over in the first year of their Apprenticeship.
However, many employers that JLT work with pay significantly more than the NMW with our Apprentices earning an average of £170 per week.
(Furthermore, if the Apprentice is aged 19 and / or has completed the first year of their Apprenticeship, the employer must pay the NMW appropriate for their age.)
Currently if you are aged 16-18, Apprenticeships of all levels are fully funded and require no contribution from yourselves or your employer.
If you are aged 19-23, there is funding available to support your Apprenticeship at all levels, however due to the subsidised nature of this funding we do require an employer contribution.
If you are aged 24 or above, there is only funding to support Advanced + Higher level apprenticeships, again due to the subsidised nature of this funding we do require an employer contribution.
Depending on your skills and experience you can study for an Intermediate Level 2, Advanced Level 3 or Higher Apprenticeship Level 4. Most Apprentices commence with a Level 2 Apprenticeship which is around GCSE level, progressing onto Level 3 which is A-Level and then finally Level 4 which is Foundation Degree level.
What is an Apprenticeship?
An apprenticeship is a real job with training which would allow your son or daughter to earn while they learn, whilst gaining a nationally recognised qualification. Apprenticeships take between one and five years to complete and cover 1,500 job roles in a wide range of industries, from engineering to accountancy, public relations to veterinary nursing. Apprenticeships are now available up to degree level and beyond.
What qualifications are attained through the apprenticeship?
For apprenticeships, the overarching certificate is the apprenticeship itself. Within that there are NVQs and English and maths qualifications. Advanced apprenticeships can lead to membership to recognised associations such as NAEA (Estate Agency), IRP, REC (Recruitment), ILM (Management).
What are functional skills?
Functional Skills are practical skills in English, Maths and ICT for all learners aged 14 and above. Functional Skills provide an individual with essential knowledge, skills and understanding that will enable them to operate confidently, effectively and independently in life and work.
They are learning tools that enable students to:
- apply their knowledge and understanding to everyday life
- engage competently and confidently with others
- solve problems in both familiar and unfamiliar situations
- develop personally and professionally as positive citizens who can actively contribute to society.
Where can my child find an apprenticeship?
Apprenticeships are offered by a wide range of employers and you’ll find them advertised on the Government’s official “Find an Apprenticeship” website, Reed and JLT.co.uk. Finding an apprenticeship can be a slightly confusing business until you get familiar with the different search techniques, however if you call JLT directly someone in our team would be happy to assist you with this.
What is an NVQ?
The NVQ is a work based qualification which recognises the skills and knowledge a person needs to do a job. The candidate needs to demonstrate and prove their competency in their chosen role or career path.
What support will my child receive?
At JLT we pride ourselves on our ongoing support, Information Advice and Guidance and coaching and mentoring throughout the whole process. Our proactive Business Development team support with decision making, CV writing, Interview tips and feedback. We will assess your child’s skills and attributes through interview, identify your child’s career aspirations and support in finding the right apprenticeship for them.
Your child will be allocated one trainer for the duration of the apprenticeship. Our expert trainers will be on hand to help support with projects, assignments and questions and will identify any areas which need improvement. With our outstanding relationship management our trainers will work closely with our employers to ensure your child receives the best support possible.
How is the apprenticeship delivered?
Our passionate training team offers one to one teaching and learning at the workplace alongside coaching and mentoring throughout the programme. Your child we be invited to attend workshops and webinars as an additional extra to the work based learning and support with revision for the Math’s, English and ICT functional skills if they didn’t achieve their A-C grades at GCSE.
What happens after the apprenticeship?
The majority our employers take on apprentices with the intent to offer a fulltime position on completion or a chance to progress onto a higher level apprenticeship. As a business working with young people we recognise the importance of Information, advice and guidance and will support your child in whatever decision they chose to make at the end of the programme. We will do a review at the 11th month point to discuss next steps.
Will my child be able to go back into education after the apprenticeship?
Yes, if your child choses to they can go to college or even university after the apprenticeship.
How does a higher apprenticeship compare to university?
Apprenticeships are available in 1,500 job roles covering more than 170 industries. There are currently 75 higher and degree apprenticeships available (with more in development) including foundation degrees, HNDs and full honours degrees.
JLT offer bespoke higher apprenticeships, an alternative to university equipping them with a broad range of business skills. Higher apprenticeships are a unique way of developing professional job specific skills whilst in employment and earning a salary.
Our tailored two year programme is delivered through engaging workshops, one to one coaching and work based assignments. A viable alternative to university, a stepping stone to management and promotion. Save an excess of £9,000 in tuition fees!
